Cello & Theorbo

Of Strings and Silence

CELLO / THEORBO

The cello and theorbo inhabit a world of extraordinary intimacy. One instrument sustains a singing line; the other answers with the delicate resonance of plucked strings. Between them, sound emerges, fades, and gives way to silence.

Moving between the seventeenth century and the present, this program explores music shaped by the expressive possibilities of the human voice. The laments and dances of Sainte-Colombe, Dowland, Marais, and Forqueray find unexpected companions in the contemplative works of Bach, Satie, Casals, and Arvo Pärt.

Across centuries, these works share a fascination with simplicity, resonance, and the expressive power of a single melodic line. In the meeting of these two instruments, ancient musical traditions become a living conversation.
